metering of fuel into the engine combustor, atomizing the fuel by fuel nozzles, and igniting the mixture, and is sustained by the modulation of fuel flow. Gas generator fuel flow modulation is at the heart of all gas turbine engine control systems. Other control system functions, which will be discussed later, have been devised to optimize compression system efficiency and improve thrust modulation flexibility. In general, control system architecture is an outcome of the following: " Aircraft/propulsion system technical requirements " Current state of technology maturity " Historical success of similar products The propulsion system technical requirements are usually flowed down from the customer and/or airframer in the form of a top-level engine specification. Particularly in the aerospace industry, technical risk level for new products weighs heavily in the selection process. Neimeyer concluded that engine programs that are launched with higher technology readiness levels (TRLs) were more likely to achieve TSFC commitments. 13 Although the research has not been conducted that would extend this conclusion downward to lower levels of decomposition, it is reasonable to assume that TRLs could also be correlated to control system performance commitments.
