3.2 Set-Based Design Toyota has been a pioneer in the field of delaying design decisions in order to maintain large design spaces well into a development program, a practice known as set-based design. Even though Toyota is credited as one ofthe originators of concurrent engineering (CE), in which products and their manufacturing systems are simultaneously engineered, the company does not seem to follow western practices of highly structured design processes with often collocated multidisciplinary teams. Moreover, while typical CE practices tend to drive design decisions early to freeze specifications, Toyota maintains a larger design space early on, delaying these design decisions until very late in the process1 7 . The early convergence to specific design specifications based on highly uncertain requirements results in non-optimum components. While Toyota seeks to evaluate many potential solutions at early phases of development programs, (primarily in the area of styling), this approach really does not apply to the aerospace propulsion business, since product success is not primarily judged by aesthetics, but by technical performance, reliability, and cost.
