When the trade study identifies the optimum concept, performance allocations to each of the pieces are flowed to the appropriate components. In many situations, the product cost and weight associated with the design solution that meets all other performance requirements will cause the components that must implement the solution to exceed established targets. 4.2.2 Control Component Design The preliminary design phase for control system components begins following the allocation of function to form via the system schematic (reference section 2.2.3.2) and the establishment of some preliminary component level requirements. On Figure 4-3, this task is represented by the symbol Recalling from the previous section, some component level requirements are directly flowed down from the engine specification with no decomposition. Thus, it is possible to begin component preliminary design with these requirements and a system functional schematic. Progression through the product definition phase is influenced by the type of component and by the timing of the definition ofthe component's functional requirements. All of these factors tend to drive out ambiguity and uncertainty. Complex components, however, usually require a great deal more decomposition and analysis in order to allocate requirements in an optimized manner.
