Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling The characteristics and the configurations of the Ground Source Heat Pump system are discussed below. 3.2. Vertical Loop Systems Vertical loops of high density polyethylene (HDPE) or cross linked polythene (PEX) pipes run a bore hole which can be 200 to 500 ft. (~60 to 150 m) deep. The vertical bore holes are usually 4 to 8 in. (~10 to 20 cm) diameter, each arranged approximately 10 ft. (~3 m) apart. The pipework is usually 3⁄4 - 11⁄2” (~20 – 40mm) diameter. As a rule of thumb, vertical loops require roughly 125 to 150 ft. (~38 to 45 m) of borehole and anywhere from 250 to 300 ft2 of ground surface per ton (~3.5 kW) of cooling. 3.3. Installation Installation methods for vertical looping include: • Hammer drilling • Rotary drilling • Down-hole motor drilling. 32PDF Image | Heat Pumps for Heating and Cooling
