Ducted mini split heat pumps capacities match our new home enclosure heating/cooling loads. As we construct homes with less air leakage, less thermal bridging, more insulation, and high-performance windows - in our mild California climate - virtually all unitary (American style) systems have heating/cooling outputs that are much too large for our homes. Another category of heating/cooling systems that are too large is ductless mini split heat pumps. Ductless systems with a wall mount head or a ceiling cassette also have capacities that are too large for all but our largest rooms. Oversized equipment contributes to higher installation costs, higher operating costs, more noise, and a lower comfort levels. (Can put heat pump equipment in smaller sizes if in a high-performance building shell.) Low installation costs due to very affordable equipment costs and easy installation. Purchasing unitary (American style) equipment, with these high-performance ratings, costs approximately 4 times more. Unitary equipment is also much harder to fit inside the conditioned space – often costing floor space. Low operating costs compared to attic ducted systems, many system energy losses are eliminated, such as duct leakage & conductive losses to attic (if the system is installed in the conditioned space). Plus all the same advanced VCHP functions as ductless. Low maintenance costs since there is built-in fault detection in the system and easy one- person component replacement. Key point: To achieve rated efficiency, the units must be properly installed, and it helps if the house is “tight” or in a high-performance building shell The unit itself may be very efficient, but not if it is poorly installed, if HVAC subcontractors are not well trained or motivated to do a proper job. Key point: Systems are often over-sized but smaller systems are required (feasible) now because new housing is much better insulated, etc. Suggestion: do your ACCA Manual calculations! Preferred: install a smaller system that still mixes the air and does everything that it should. It is easy to fit the units inside the conditioned space. It will be quiet, have great MERV 13 filtration, integrate well with ventilation. We don’t need to automatically install 3-ton air conditioners when a 1⁄2 ton will do. Also, there are heat pumps that are specifically made for cold climates. PROPERTY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, 2020. DO NOT ALTER. 37
