Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Variable Capacity Heat Pump (VCHP) “Variable refrigerant flow” (VRF), also known as “variable refrigerant volume” (VRV) is a “best in class” type system that: • Provides energy savings but has higher upfront costs. • Can be mini split, in either ductless or ducted systems. • Monitor outdoor air temperature, indoor air temperature, and the temperature setpoint. • Modulate refrigerant flow and air flow to operate as efficiently as possible. • Can provide continuous heating even during defrost. Code calls VRF systems “VCHP” (variable capacity heat pumps) – these two names refer to the same technology. PROPERTY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, 2020.
