How the Energy Code Treats Heat Pumps UNTIL 2020: All heat pumps were modeled as minimum efficiency split heat pump systems with ducts in the attic - No credit for being ductless - No credit for high SEER or HSPF NOW: - Home will earn 5% cooling energy savings and 12% heating savings in energy modeling - PLUS ducts in conditioned space earn additional credit In the 2016 energy code, ductless heat pumps (both mini-split and multi-split) were simulated as minimum efficiency ducted split heat pump systems, equivalent to the standard design and with default duct conditions -regardless of what is modeled. This translates to: • No credit for being ductless • No credit for high SEER or HSPF The 2016 code used a maximum SEER rating of 14, in spite of many units touting much higher SEER ratings. That is, the calculations that determined whether a project met the energy budget were “capped” using SEER 14. Now under the 2019 code, the VCHP credit allows us to recognize the improved efficiency of heat pumps. The VCHP likely under- estimates the performance of high-efficiency heat pumps. Residents are likely to experience higher savings than the models would suggest. PROPERTY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON, 2020. DO NOT ALTER. 45PDF Image | Heat Pumps for New Construction
