Background 1 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Energy is essential in daily life. Energy facilitates transportation, lighting, heating etc. However, most energy resources come from fossil fuel which has a major impact on the environment due to the greenhouse gas emission by fuel burning. The greenhouse effect is caused by atmospheric gases that absorb and emit infrared radiation [1]. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a phrase used to describe the increased warming of the earth’s surface and lower atmosphere as a result of increased levels of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gases. Change in the atmospheric temperature (climate change) of the Earth which has been detected in recent years show that the release of greenhouse gases (e.g. water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide), into atmosphere by human activities such as, fossil fuel burning, trap more of the solar radiation that is reflected by the Earth’s surface, causing an increase in the atmospheric temperature [2, 3]. A very important component of the atmosphere is carbon dioxide. It is absorbed by oceans and living plant and it is emitted to the atmosphere through natural processes. In the past, awareness in the greenhouse effect has focused mainly on carbon dioxide. Each year million tons of carbon is released into the air mostly as a result of fossil fuel consumption [3]. Due to the vast industrial projects such as refineries, carbon dioxide has increased in the atmosphere over the past decades. If emissions still carry on without taking action, the global temperature will rise by 5°C causing an environmental change that can drastically affect our planet [3, 4].
