Background At the cathode protons combine together with oxygen and electrons to form water. Equation 1.3 explains the electrochemical reaction which occurs at the cathode [10]: 2𝐻+ + 1𝑂2 + 2𝑒− → 𝐻2𝑂 (1.3) 2 Figure 1.1 shows a schematic diagram of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) where hydrogen gas acts as the fuel and oxygen is supplied from air [9] Figure 1.1 Hydrogen fuel cell concept [9]. The single cell consists of a single membrane sandwiched between the anode and cathode to form the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). This inner sandwich (MEA) is placed in-between current collectors which serve as the terminals of the cell. 1.6.1 FuelCellEfficiency The theoretical fuel cell efficiency calculation differs from the internal combustion engine. The maximum efficiency of the internal combustion engine or gas turbine engine is measured by the Carnot efficiency limits (due to the dependency of cold (Tc) and hot (TH) temperatures) whereas the fuel cell theoretical efficiency can be measure by the Gibbs free energy change of the fuel cell reaction (ΔG) and the enthalpy change of the fuel cell reaction (ΔH).
