Method and characterisation Mixture was filtered, washed with toluene, and centrifuged again for several time at 10500 rpm for 12 min. F-mordenite was dried at 100°C overnight and labeled as Phen-MOR. Mordenite (1.0 g) was mixed with 1.0 M sulfuric acid (2.0 ml) for 1 hour at room temperature. Powder washed with water several time, centrifuged, dried in drying cabinet overnight, and labeled as SULFO-MOR. 3.6.1 Sulfonated Mordenite Modified Binding Layer Nafion solution 117 (5% in a mixture of lower aliphatic alcohols and water, sigma-Aldrich)(0.486 g) was mixed with acetone (5.0 ml) for 5 min SULFO-MOR (0.0036 g) was added to the mixture. Mixture was sonicated and stirred for 2 hr forming a homogeneous solution. Sulfonated modified binding layer was sprayed on the anode electrode after the catalyst layer. Three layers of modified binding layer were coated via airbrush on the electrode surface; each layer is followed by drying at 100°C in oven for 10 minutes. The following figure shows the order of the MEA from the anode side of the fuel cell. 3.6.1.1 X- ray diffraction of mordenite Since mordenite has been gone through several reaction mechanisms, it was necessary to take the SULFO-MOR to XRD for phase identity. The angle theta range for mordenite is between 5 and 40. The step size of the analysis was 0.03° and the time per step was 3 seconds. Figure 3.35 shows the XRD pattern for the SULFO-MOR.
