Results and discussion (b) (a) Figure 6.1 (a) Nyquist plot of standard MEA at different fuel cell temperature and 1.0 M methanol anode feed (b) Expanded x-axis intercept The proton resistivity (RΩ) of standard MEA at 70°C was ~ 0.0604 (Ω) whereas at 40°C the proton resistivity was ~ 0.078. These data were presented at the real axis (x-axis). The Nyquist plot consists of the high range frequency region which is on the left of and low range frequency region which on the right. These regions can be used for estimating the losses in the fuel cell. Figure 6.1 indicates that the proton resistivity across the membrane (RΩ) is inversely proportional to fuel cell temperature. At 40°C the Nyquist plot shows a greater semicircle than 70°C particularly at the low frequency region. This behaviour was expected since the oxidation (methanol at anode) reduction (air at cathode) reactions are favoured by high temperature. However, real axis (x-axis) of the semicircle represents the proton resistivity which depends on the electrode surface area as well as the membrane thickness and methanol concentration. Therefore, the methanol concentration effect on the proton conductivity was measured in DMFC. The following experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of proton resistivity at different methanol concentrations for standard MEA.
