At 1.0 M the proton resistivity was ~ 0.060 Ω whereas at 4.0 M ~0.073 Ω. This indicates a direct relation between the charge transfer resistance and the methanol concentration. In the fuel cell, the higher the ohmic loss the lower is the power density and therefore, lowering the proton resistivity (i.e. low ohmic loss) increases the fuel cell performance. According to Grotthuss diffusion mechanism, the proton generated from a hydrogen molecule at the anode benefits from the water molecules within the membrane which aid the proton hopping from one water molecule to another through the network of hydrogen bonds across the membrane. Therefore, increasing the methanol concentration can increase the proton transportation resistivity which may be attributed to the lower presence of water molecules.
