Results and discussion 6.2.1 Methanol Crossover of Standard Membrane in DMFC The methanol crossover was determined by using Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) using auto-lab. The experiment was carried out for standard MEA in DMFC at different fuel cell temperature and methanol concentration. In this run, the scan window range was from zero to 1.0 V (lower and upper limits respectively). The plot shows the current response as a function of voltage. The highest methanol crossover (estimated by limiting current density using LSV ~ 90 mA/cm2) was obtained at 70°C. The methanol crossover is directly related to fuel cell temperature. The mass transport losses increases as the operating temperature increased. This explains the fuel cell performance shown in Figure 6.3. However, optimizing the fuel cell temperature is needed to drive the reaction kinetics which takes place at the electrode surface. Further experiments were conducted to study the methanol crossover at different methanol concentrations. The run was made at 70°C and 5.0 ml/min anode flow rate.
