128 Figure β€Ž5-6 presents the effect of flow coefficient πœ‘ on the performance of the turbine (power and efficiency), its maximum size, and Mach number at rotor inlet at different pressure ratios. Figure β€Ž5-6a and Figure β€Ž5-6c show that the flow coefficient πœ‘ has a significant impact on the turbine total to static efficiency πœ‚π‘‘π‘  and overall turbine sizeπ‘Ÿ1. The increase in flow coefficient πœ‘ is detrimental to the turbine total to static efficiency πœ‚π‘‘π‘  and beneficial to the turbine compact size. The definition of the flow coefficient in equation(β€Ž4-6)implies that the increase of this parameter leads to higher meridional velocity at the rotor exit πΆπ‘š5 and, therefore, higher exit loss, as shown in equation(β€Ž5-94) (next section). Figure β€Ž5-6bdepicts the effects of flow coefficient πœ‘ on the turbine power output π‘Šπ‘œπ‘’π‘‘ , which decreases slightly as πœ‘ increases. This phenomenon can be justified by the definition of πœ‘ and Euler equation in equation(β€Ž5-23). As πœ‘ increases, the rotor blade speed π‘ˆ4 decreases, thereby resulting in low power output. The effect of πœ‘ on the Mach number is insignificant because the two parameters have no direct relationship, as shown in Figure β€Ž5-6d. Figure β€Ž5-6also depicts the effect of turbine total to static pressure ratio 𝑃𝑅𝑑𝑠 while increasing πœ‘. The variation of 𝑃𝑅𝑑𝑠 has remarkable effects on the investigated parameters. As 𝑃𝑅𝑑𝑠 increases, the enthalpy drop through the turbine stage increases, leading to high turbine power output π‘Šπ‘œπ‘’π‘‘ . The increase in enthalpy drop leads to larger rotor diameter and, hence, larger turbine size π‘Ÿ1. The increase in the pressure ratio likewise leads to high Mach number 𝑀4 , where the flow becomes supersonic at 𝑃𝑅𝑑𝑠 β‰₯ 5.
