CARBON REMOVAL 101 26 A number of carbon removal solutions have begun to emerge as critical complements to other climate mitigation options. While the list of proposed carbon removal approaches is extensive, approaches can roughly be categorized according to two car- bon capture pathways: biological and chemical (or a hybrid of the two), shown in Figure 7. Numerous carbon removal solutions have potential, but each faces challenges BIOLOGICAL CARBON REMOVAL Biological carbon removal systems harness the abili- ty of photosynthesis to capture carbon from the air. Because photosynthesis naturally results in a car- bon-neutral cycle (plants release carbon back into the atmosphere when they die and decompose), biological carbon removal systems can generate net-negative CO2 emissions in one of two ways: 1) by increasing the relative balance of carbon in ter- restrial ecosystems compared to the atmosphere, or 2) by employing processes that prevent the release of photosynthetically captured carbon back into the atmosphere. These solutions can often be used in conjunction and thus these categories are not mutu- ally exclusive. Example solutions include: 1. Carbon farming: Certain agricultural techniques have been shown to increase plant stocks in a given area of land and/or to enhance the ability of soils to uptake and store carbon. Carbon farming prac- tices can be facilitated either through biotechnology or land management. Biotechnology can be used to increase carbon stocks by making plants grow faster or grow deeper roots. Common land management practices that have been shown to enhance natural carbon storage include conservation tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation, compost application, and rotational livestock grazing. CARBON FARMING TAKES ROOT: • Texas A&M AgriLife Research received a $4.6 million award from ARPA-E for ground penetrating radar to help better visualize root traits and soil organic carbon to promote carbon sequestration in agriculture. • The United States Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) has created tools to help farmers sequester carbon through a variety of practices. The COMET Farm and COMET Planner tools can be used to calculate on-farm emissions from cultivation practices and the car- bon sequestration benefits from adopting specific NRCS practices. These models make it easier for pro- ducers to evaluate the potential for soil carbon sequestrationand allow for the adoption of climate-smart agricultural techniques.PDF Image | Philanthropy Final Report
