c). Time effect at 6000 psi The result is shown in Figure 11 blow. The figure also demonstrates a steady WRP trend when time is increased from 3 hours to 6 hours at the three temperature levels with pressure set at 6000 psi level. As shown by the data, the time increases from 3 hours to 6 hours induce very small increase in averaged WRP at 150 C and 200 C when pressure is set at 6000 psi level, while a very small decrease in WRP is presented for time increase at 250 C. The results are consistent with those in previous studies at 2000 psi and 4000 psi pressure levels, which further confirm the conclusion that no WRP increase happens by time increase from 3 hours to 6 hours at the three temperature levels. d). Summary By the three group studies of time change effect on PCB dissolutions in SCF CO2 at the three pressure levels, the analysis leads to a conclusion that PCB dissolution through solubility of PCB resins in SCF CO2 is good enough with 3 hour treatment time. Increase of dissolution time over 3 hours induces very few changes on the averaged weight reduction of five PCB materials. The time effect studies indicate that it may be possible for a quicker treatment of PCBs in SCF CO2 with even a shorter time less than 3 hours, which will be explored in the optimization of the process and hence is not included in this research work. A short time will be highly significant in both economic and environmental views for future applications of the process in real production. SCF CO2 Plus Water Treatment In the experiment, water is added as environmentally benign co-solvent to enhance the interactions between SCF CO2 and PCB resins. According to the empirical studies by other researchers [19], the amount of water added in each run is equal to 7 mole percent of CO2 amount at the specific pressure and temperature conditions, as shown in table 30 below. Pressure effect with H2O added as co-solvent The WRP data are organized to examine the effect of pressure change on PCB dissolution in SCF CO2 when 7 mole % of water is added as co-solvent. The pressure is studied at three levels, namely 2000, 4000 and 6000 psi, respectively, at the same temperature and time level.
