“We Freeze to Please” Figure 4–4. Unprotected propeller spinning after icing run, 1948. (NACA C-34635) 1970, Richard I. Adams, as lead engineer for environmental technology, became respon- sible for aircraft icing research and development programs at the U.S. Army’s Applied Technology Laboratory in Fort Eustis, Virginia.8 Adams launched an R & D program to establish meteorological criteria for helicopter ice-protection systems. The major technological shortcoming, he early determined, was rotor blade protection. A UH-1H (Huey) was modified to act as a test bed, incorporating experi- mental ice-protection systems. Initially, the redesigned UH-1N flight-tested a cyclic electro-thermal de-icing concept that the Army had developed. Results proved disappointing, primarily due to excessive weight requirements for the system. “There is a pressing need,” he concluded, “to develop advanced concepts for rotor blade ice protection to provide military and civil operators a cost-effective, light-weight means of protecting rotor blades.”9 8 Adams to Leary, 9 November 2000. 9 Adams, “Overview of Helicopter Ice Protection System Development,” NASA Conference Report 2086, pp. 39–65; Adams to Leary, 19 June 2001. 68
