“We Freeze to Please” Sikorsky VS-300 Helicopter. The ceremony took place at Lewis on 20 May 1987. Many of the individuals who were responsible for the design and construction of the IRT were present, along with the researchers who had worked in the facility during the 1940s and 1950s. The ASME formally designated the IRT as the 21st International Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark and placed a plaque on the building that proclaimed the following: The icing research tunnel is the oldest and largest refrigerated icing wind tunnel in the world. The world’s aircraft fly safely through icing clouds because of the technology developed in this tunnel.
