(NASA C-1992-10571) This had been followed by the ATR 72, a stretched version, 14 feet, 8 inches longer than the original model, that could accommodate 72 passengers and crew. American Eagle operated twenty-five ATR 42s and twenty-two ATR 72s. The ATR 42/72 was certified for flight into forecast icing conditions, having demonstrated the ability to operate safely in the maximum continuous and maximum intermittent icing envelopes specified in Part 25, Appendix C of FAA Regulations. To protect against icing, the ATR-42/72 had pneumatic boots on the leading edges of the wing, as well as the horizontal and vertical stabilizer. A pneumatic system also protected the engine air inlets, while electric heating was used for propeller blades, windshield, pitot tubes, and balance horns of the ailerons, elevator, and rudder. The airplane was equipped with an Ice Evidence Probe, outside and below the left cockpit window, which gave the pilot visible evidence of ice accretion. In addition, there was a state-of-the-art Rosemount ultrasonic ice-detector probe mounted on the underside of the leading edge of left wing, between the pneumatic boots, that gave both a visual and aural alarm of ice accretion. 132PDF Image | History of NASA Icing Research Tunnel
