“We Freeze to Please” Figure 8–4. Super-cooled large droplet experiment with Twin Ottenberg, 1995: technicians (L/R) Timothy Hawk, David Justavick, Richard Flasig; researchers (L/R) Gene Addy, Dean Miller, and Colin Bidwell. (NASA C-1995-4010) When NASA resumed icing research in the late 1970s, the reports on industry require- ments that had been commissioned to set the research agenda for the icing branch recommended that ice-phobics be given a high priority. Reinmann was receptive. “Without doubt,” he told the press in 1981, “the ideal anti-icing agent is the ‘ice-phobic’ one that could be permanently applied to critical surfaces, adding little weight, being low in cost and never replaced. The search for that miracle is a high-risk venture with high pay-off potential.”8 Reinmann put together a joint program with the Army and U.S. Air Force to test ice-phobic coatings in the IRT. Using an interfacial shear rig that had been developed by operations engineer Sotos, researcher Peggy Evanich examined a number of substances, including GE silicone greases, that gave good results. Reinmann, however, became dis- 8 Lewis News, 10 April 1981. 156
