For these applications, maximum power output is achieved when the thermodynamic efficiency of the cycle is maximized. Because these cycles perform poorly for non-recirculated sources, such as bottoming applications, they are not considered here. On the other hand, heat recovery cycles are designed to maximize power output by simultaneously achieving high thermodynamic efficiency and minimizing the unrecovered enthalpy to the greatest allowable extent. As a result, for the same heat source temperature, the direct conversion efficiency of heat recovery cycles is lower than that of the typically considered cycles (recompression, partial cooling, etc.).
