They provide the rotor with support. The thrust developed by the overall rotor is absorbed by thrust bearings at the end of the rotor. One arrangement of key bearing positions is shown in figure 40. The bearings in the hot section require far more oil flow than those in the cooler compressor section. Thermocouples or RTDs measure oil flow temperature. Sudden temperature rises in the oil trigger an alarm or shutdown. The section on design development refers to varying design philosophies between OEMs. The lubrication system is one area where it shows as much as anywhere else.
