Whereas the renewable energy based cycles (a, b, and d) are considered materially closed, the fossil fuel based cycle (b) is carbon-neutral but the carbon is stored in an oxidized form. Recycling CO2 into a hydrocarbon fuel would open a new sector, the transportation fuel sector, to renewable energy, which was previously not accessible to renewable energy sources apart from biomass.
