CARBON REMOVAL 101 31 7. Mineral capture and storage: Leading approaches for mineral capture involve the enhanced weathering of rocks that contain minerals that will bind with CO2 naturally when exposed to the air. Mineral capture processes accelerate natural CO2 capture processes that can traditionally take hun- dreds of thousands of years. By extracting, crushing, and spreading minerals (such as silicates) over large areas, sequestration can occur on a time scale relevant to curtailing anthropogenic climate change. CARBON NEGATIVE MATERIALS While there are few options for consumers “vote with their wallets” for carbon-negative solutions, there are products that consumers can purchase today that provide commercial- ization stepping-stones for carbon removal technologies, including: Carbon-sequestering roofs: Alumasc, a roofing materials company from the United Kingdom, has created roofing materials with a derbigum olivine membrane that sequesters CO2 when it comes in contact with water. Studies esti- mate that 1 kg of olivine, an iron-magnesium silicate, can sequester 1.25 kg of CO2. These roofs align with the strength and durability of other roofing materials, and can provide cost-competitive early markets for enhanced weathering solution developers.20 Phone cases made from GHG emissions: Sprint recently partnered with Newlight Tech- nologies to create cell phone cases made from Newlight’s AirCarbon technology. Newlight uses greenhouse gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere to create thermo- plastics with similar durability as their petro- leum counterparts, and has plans to source CO2 directly from atmosphere in the future as a manufacturing input.
