Salgenx Energy Storage Simultaneous Desalination

A breakthrough in desalination technology has been announced today with the unveiling of a new system that uses a saltwater flow battery (BESS) cycle to produce clean drinking water from seawater. This innovative solution has been developed to create a sustainable and cost-effective way of storing energy while simultaneously producing fresh water.

The desalination system operates by using a saltwater flow battery cycle without the need for a membrane. The system can use a renewable energy source, such as solar power or large wind turbine, to charge the battery, making it both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Infinity Turbine IT10 Waste Heat to Energy System for biomass organic rankine cycle as an alternative to the orc screw expander

About Infinity Turbine LLC

Waste Heat Power: For years we've been hearing requests from customers who would like to use their waste heat to generate power, both on land and marine applications.  To meet that demand, we formed Infinity Turbine LLC in 2008 and developed the IT10, the worlds first production 10 kw ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) waste heat to power generator.

New developments in CO2 Brayton Cycle may allow efficiencies to reach 30-50 percent. This is a huge increase from the legacy ORC process which has a system efficiency (bottoming cycle) of 5-15 percent).

We now offer a CO2 Turbine Development Platform for educators and energy developers.

Viktor Schauberger

Viktor Schauberger was a student of nature and more specifically water flows. He was gifted with the patient skills of observation and an appreciation of the outdoors.

His fascination of mountain streams and how water worked for the environment led to many innovations and inventions which pertain to flow control and the science of water. He realized that water flows were similar to air (just a different density) which led to his lift turbines and craft.

He was one of the first scientists to realize that water has many dimensions and structure. Water has surface tension and boundary layer mechanisms, which were revolutionary before 1900. Of course Nikola Tesla also realized this with his disc turbine around the same period.

Many of his early innovations were focussed around the transport of sawn timber and transporting and then sorting them by use of water and displacement. Back then, transporting timber from the mountains was not without problems. This was before helicopter lifts, trucks (and roads), and aerial cable lift lines.

Simultaneous brine treatment and energy storage with lithium brine mining process bonus that Tesla is patenting

What is Brine

What is brine?

In general, brine is any solution with an extremely high concentration of salts, such as sodium chloride, which can occur either naturally (as with seawater, deep-water ocean pools, salt lakes, producer water from oil and gas drilling) or as a byproduct of industry. These byproducts, or brine waste streams, are typically highly concentrated salt solutions that, in some cases, contain more than twice the amount of concentrated salts than natural brine solutions.

Brine waste streams can also be highly concentrated with total dissolved solids (TDS), such as waste streams in many chemical manufacturing processes, and they can be some of the most challenging to treat or discharge because their composition and purification requirements are dynamic and complex.

Some examples of brine waste created as a byproduct of industry include:

-cooling tower and boiler effluent

-reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange waste/reject streams

-produced water from extracting oil and natural gas

chlor-alkali and chemical plant waste

-acid rock and mine drainage

-food preservation and manufacturing waste streams

-desalination waste from potable water creation

irrigation runoff

Our novel solution is treating this solution considered and expensive headache, into a battery technology system.

Elon Musk and Tesla even think that recovery of lithium from brine is worth patenting. However, they are not the first to do so. (1962 Lithium from Brine Patent)

Battery Technology: With the advent of the new USA tax credits for producing and selling batteries ($35/kW) we are focussing on a simple flow battery using shipping containers as the modular electrolyte storage units with tax credits up to $140,000 per system. We are focussing on the salt battery. This battery can be used for both thermal and electrical storage applications. We call it the Cogeneration Battery or Cogen Battery.

We are also looking into converting salt based water conditioners to simultaneously produce power.

Progress and Applications of Seawater-Activated Batteries

Nearly 50% of the world’s population lives by the sea. Of the 17 largest cities in the world, 14 are located near the coast, and they consume most of the electricity. The required electricity is transmitted from long distances, increasing costs and reducing energy efficiency. Recently, renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, wave, and tidal energy generators have been deployed offshore and by the sea to reduce energy transmission distances. However, large-scale EES systems are necessary to provide stable electrical energy, and rechargeable seawater-activated batteries can be a better option for large amounts of electrical energy storage. It is expected that offshore and waterfront deployments of rechargeable seawater-activated batteries may be very easy, since they operate in seawater as the main battery component. Sand Battery Basics

A sand battery is simply a thermal storage device that accepts and rejects heat. While its current use is primarily heating, it can also be used for cooling. Silicon dioxide (sand) is thermally stable up to around 1000 C, and has a high heat capacity.

The goal is a cost effective method of storing energy. With properly insulated storage containment, thermal energy can be stored for months.

The basic setup is a insulated container of sand, with a arrangement of conduit (pipes) embedded in the sand. That simple. The commercial prototype in Finland projects a investment cost of less than 10 Euros per kWh of storage capacity.

The concept of a sand battery is similar to using geothermal cooling (putting fluid conduit, including liquid or gas in the ground) but in this case, it's using sand instead of Earth.

Other forms of using Earth materials for thermal storage:

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) has been used commercially for air conditioning (commonly referred to as Sea Water Air Conditioning or SWAC). It is used at The Brando Resort in Tahiti where the temperature of sea water is 4-5 C at 960 meters down. In Switzerland Lac Leman (Geneva) and Lake Walensee (Densitas AG) are utilizing 6 C deep lake cooling.

A commercial ice storage method called CalMac has been used for decades which uses off peak evening power to make ice, which is stored in huge insulated tanks, for later use as air conditioning.

Diesel Generator ORC Power Produced in kW

Utilizing waste heat from Diesel Generators to make free power.

Taking waste heat from diesel generators can produce free power in a Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system. The sources of waste heat are engine cooling (replacing large coolant system fan) and stack exhaust which is normally waste heat to the atmosphere.

The ORC does require a cool liquid condenser flow, but generally can utilize the waste heat from the diesel engine to provide 28 percent savings. Generally a 500 kW diesel or larger are prime candidates for utilizing waste heat to make power. Those savings may be greater than $200,000 USD per year for a 500 kW or larger generator running 24/7.

Exhaust to Power: With an additional waste heat to thermal oil heat exchanger, you can capture the diesel exhaust from the pipe to supply heat to the Infinity turbine. This is about 40 percent of total fuel savings as shown in chart below.

Coolant to Power: Pipe straight to the Infinity turbine. This is about 32 percent of total fuel savings as shown in chart below.

IT Micro Redstone Turbine with Counter-rotating Pump printed in 3D metal

IT Micro Redstone 3D Metal Turbine with 2 inch Diameter Counter-rotating Pump

The goal of the Redstone project was to incorporate all moving and rotating functions into one component. This is done by using a layered up rotating assembly, or 3D printed in metal or cast carbon fiber.

Expander (turbine): CO2, ORC, Rankine Cycle, refrigerants, CO2, compressed air, water

Compressor (pump): water, CO2, air, refrigerants

Shaft Free: Turbine assembly is the shaft (magnetic bearings or perimeter bearings).

Cavitation Disc: Can be used for making fluids go supercritical (ex. CO2), or can be plugged with magnets to produce induction heating.

History: The Redstone project was made into 3D printed metal (sintered) steel. What we found was that larger parts tended to lose tolerance as the parts grew in size, so the turbine was designed at 2 inches or less in diameter and turned to true for high speed rotational tolerance. The housing castings needed to be machined to tolerance on the inside and trued for surface mounting.

Final Project: The project was printed by X-One when the larger housing tolerance problems were found. We received boxes of these castings, which were ultimately thrown away. A few surviving parts remain (which are solid metal and extremely heavy). There are a total of three parts, which reduces build time and has a huge time savings from standard metal machining. Ultimately, the best method we found (most cost effective and fast) was cutting basic parts with a waterjet, then layering up for 3D effect, and to achieve the internal chamber structure (complex counter-rotating screws).

Plans and licensing available.

Infinity Turbine 1 MW ROT Turbine Dual 24 inch diameter rotors with 12 inch stack height with three stages

Radial Outflow Turbine 1MW AC Generator Hermetically Sealed

Using a scaled up version of existing ROT technology, this design may produce 1 megawatt of power. Turbine would operate at full load speed of 3600 rpm. Turbine is direct mounted to an induction generator (2-pole). Due to the large size of the generator, it is likely a higher voltage than typical (2400V+) and would probably need to be direct grid connect because grid tie controllers cannot be found in this size or voltage. Size of generator likely to be 31in OD and needs a custom cast iron housing for direct refrigerant cooling.

Construction of plates and turbine are possible using current manufacturing capabilities. Large cast iron housings are likely to be outsourced to a vendor (several available). Generator may be an induction motor from a chiller motor supplier (operating in reverse) if no generator suppliers can be found.

Oregano Oil Extract May be the next Battery Electrolyte

Oregano Oil Extract May be the next Battery Electrolyte

Electrolytes are characterized by their ionic conductivity. It is desirable that overall results from the dominant contribution of the ions of interest (e.g. Li+ in lithium ion batteries or LIB). However, high values of cationic transference number achieved by solid or gel electrolytes have resulted in low leading to inferior cell performances. Organogel polymer electrolyte characterized by a high liquid-electrolyte-level with high t+ for LIB. A conventional liquid electrolyte in presence of a cyano resin was physically and irreversibly gelated without any initiators and crosslinkers, showing the behavior of lower critical solution temperature. During gelation, the electrolyte followed a typical Arrhenius-type temperature dependency, even if its viscosity increased dramatically with temperature. Based on the Li+- driven ion conduction, LIB using the organogel electrolyte delivered significantly enhanced cyclability and thermal stability.

Corn starch is a flexible and stable binder

Corn Starch Electrode Coating

Starch as a green binder: It is demonstrated that starch can be successfully implemented as a binder in energy storage systems with non-aqueous electrolytes. These devices are characterized by a stable cycle life (for 50,000 cycles) at a nominal voltage of 2.5 V. Moreover, the use of starch-based conductive glue improves the electrochemical performance, especially reducing the internal resistance of the device. Starch-bound electrodes display lower equivalent distributed resistance (EDR) values than electrodes using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as the binder.

Printable: Corn starch and citric acid, two low-cost and abundant materials, were used for establishing a novel screen printable hydrogel for printed electronics applications. Corn starch was modified with citric acid by melt-blending, the so obtained thermoplastic starch was ground to powder and added to a water-starch suspension.

Flexible: Starch, as one of the most abundant natural polymers, has been exhibiting great potentials in the development of environmental-friendly FEs due to its inexpensiveness, good processability, and biodegradability.

50 mm or 2 inch diameter heat pump propulsion examples including cavitation and expander

Can a Heat Pump propulsion system extend battery range by 50 percent or more ?

We have been working on a new type of closed-loop CO2 heat pump system which may extend the range of batteries.

This would apply to electric cars, electric trucks, industrial contruction equipment, and battery powered aircraft (drones, RC, and passenger aircraft).

Our patented Modular Block system is perfect for vehicles, homes, and scalable applications. The image on the left is our 2 inch diameter cavitation, turbine, and integral counter-rotating compressor expander (CO2 Jet Turbine) examples. For HVAC installations we're expecting at least a COP of 5.

The concept of the heat pump is to amplify and use heat from both electricity and the environment. An efficient heat pump can have a COP (coefficient of performance) of 2 or more. That means for every 1 kW of electrical input, you get 2 kW of thermal output (cooling or heating). For a typical heat resistor at 100 percent efficiency, you would get a COP of 1.

The concept is to use a high energy dense working fluid like CO2 and leverage the lower boiling temperature (where it goes supercritical around 31.1C or 87.9 F) into a increased pressurized vapor.

There are a wide range of energy possibilities, including using the skin of the vehicle for collecting or dissipating thermal energy. Of particular interest is aviation applications where the upper atmosphere is always a big cold sink (condenser).

In the construction industry, this could easily be applied to vehicles with hydrostatic (hydraulic) drives for stationary (conveyers) or mobile (earth moving equipment) applications.

Currently looking for investors to develop this concept more, so we can approach Tesla and other large battery powered (range anxiety) applications.

Gas Flow Battery Regulated by RPM of Turbine

Swing Adsorption Gas Capacitor Turbine

Another innovation from Infinity Turbine is the CO2 gas capacitor turbine (or gas flow battery).

With a closed loop hybrid of the Brayton Cycle within the Organic Rankine Cycle, Infinity discovered the production of high voltage DC static charges when expanding pressurized CO2 over a hybrid plastic. The speed of the turbine regulates the flow, which in turn, will regulate the storage or production of power. The working fluid (CO2) has a low temperature boiling point which allows it to work with a cavitation compression system, or low grade waste heat to go supercritical.

Enter the CO2 Supercapacitor: This new field was recently published by Nanoscale in 2022: Supercapacitive swing adsorption (SSA) is a recently discovered electrochemically driven CO2 capture technology that promises significant efficiency improvements over traditional methods. (see link below)

The new research confirms that this technology can be used in many applications, including harvesting CO2 from the atmosphere, as well as energy storage devices from remote power generators, off-grid applications, and peak-shaving for demand power periods within the grid.

Power generation or storage can be achieved by solid state static whips or by rotating discs from the turbine (direct drive or free-spooling).

Solar Energy Options for UK

As the crazy electrical and gas rates increase, the attractiveness of solar energy becomes greater, since the payback on investment is shorter. From the rates I've seen, it looks like power will go up to around 52 p/kWh (around $.60 per kWh) for standard rates (up from around 18-30 p/kWh).

Your options are solar thermal (hot water or hot air from the Sun), solar photovoltaic (PV) generating electricity from the Sun for self use or export back to the grid, and non solar time-of-use battery arbitrage (if you have a cheaper off peak electrical rate, store power in a battery at night, then use during the day).

All options have varying paybacks depending on initial costs and how well you use power.

But first, lets look at ways to reduce your power demand.

CO2 Cavitation Device Used for Pumping and Sonochemistry Experiments

Make Rocket Fuel from CO2

Infinity has already built lots of closed-loop supercritical CO2 systems, and experimented with CO2 cavitation to make a one-moving-part liquid CO2 pump.

Infinity currently sells a cart-mounted portable on-demand supercritical CO2 phase change system for $150,000 which can be used for the experiments listed below, along with many others. It is a cart which was designed to fit through any standard door, hallway, or elevator and has heaving duty casters for mobility.

We are currently looking for funding to develop the following:

1. On-Demand CO2 to Alcohol: Using our closed-loop liquid CO2 phase change system, adding Nafion in the process to make alcohol. Inputs: Liquid CO2, water, and electricity. About 3-4 kW to make a liter of alcohol (from lab experiments).

2. CO2 to Alcohol with In-Situ Power Generation: Using our closed-loop supercritical CO2 phase change system, produce the power via miniature CO2 turbine generator of static electricity generator (SEG) to power the conversion via Nafion.

3. Spin-To-Liquid (STL): A novel one-step approach to producing alcohol from liquid CO2 using a cavitation device with Nafion. This is a one-moving-part device employing sonochemistry with inputs of water and liquid CO2. Electricity is produced in-situ. Shaft rotation is required to spin the device (this can be done via a electric motor, pressure expanding turbine, or other shaft rotation such as a wind turbine).

You can further our efforts by buying our $150,000 systems (which we build - and have four in stock) or by considering an investment to fund our development.

Teaser: Why was Nikola Tesla so fascinated with static electricity and spinning discs ? Our guess is that he had already found the worlds best battery - water. The Tesla turbine (while a fascinating pump) was actually a static electricity generator originally designed to charge water. All of his Colorado Springs experiments revolved around static electricity. Power generation and (wireless) transportation was via static electricity.

Supercritical CO2 can treat Nafion for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Supercritical CO2 to treat Nafion for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Supercritical carbon dioxide treatment was used to enhance performance of NR212. The microstructure of NR212 membranes was reorganized after the Sc-CO2 treatment. The treated NR212 membranes showed higher proton conductivity than Nafion 117. The treated NR212 membranes showed lower methanol permeability than Nafion 117. Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) performance of the treated NR212 membranes was better than Nafion 117 (2012). The Nafion-grafted-polystyrene sulfonic acid (N-g-pssa) exhibits higher ion conductivity and lower methanol permeability than that of Nafion 115. The N-g-pssa membranes are tested as electrolytes in a direct methanol fuel cell. Compared with the as-received NR212 membranes, all the Sc-CO2 treated NR212 membranes show higher proton conductivity and better capacity of barrier to methanol crossover. From Fenton test, it can be found that the Sc-CO2 treated NR212 membranes have better chemical stability than that of NR212 membranes. Therefore, NR212 membranes treated by the Sc-CO2 method may be promising candidate electrolytes for DMFC applications (2020).

Infinity Turbine GTL Gas to Liquids Module for converting CO2 to fuels and plastics

Infinity Turbine GTL Module Experimenters Platform to Make Rocket Fuel from CO2

Infinity is now offering an experimenters platform for those who wish to develop liquid or gas CO2 to plastics and alcohol fuels. Inputs: CO2, H20, DC electricity, and Nafion or other membrane catalysts.

Our journey into CO2 to fuels started in 2004 along with John Stevens (investor) when we started Ocean Ethanol LLC. Back then we looked at using a Fischer Tropsch catalyst to convert CO2 and H2 into fuel grade ethanol and methanol. Hydrogen was problematic (too expensive to produce) so we looked at reversing a methanol fuel cell (electrolyzer). The project was shelved in 2005. But with renewed interest in the XPrize, we are now looking at adapting our developed Supercritical CO2 Systems to work with a reverse fuel cell (RFC) using Nafion.

Converting CO2 to Fuel Grade Ethanol, Methanol, and Butanol using a Reverse Fuel Cell

Infinity is now providing experimental platforms for developing modular cart mounted GTL (gas to liquids) fuel processing from CO2. Using Nafion or similar catalysts (available in sheets, tubes, pellets, and more), the inputs are CO2, water, and electricity to make alcohol (ethanol, methanol, and butanol). The selectivity of the output will depend on your formula for the inputs and catalyst. The Infinity GTL Processor allows you to adjust the flow of CO2, water, and electricity. The platform also allows you to incorporate and modulate in-situ power production, static electricity generation (SEG), and other unique functions. The processor platform is available in a completed cart, or parts (kit form) for developers who want to configure their own system.

Waste Heat to Energy

List of selected waste heat to energy publications.

Waste Heat to Energy is a renewable energy field which deploys technology to utilize industrial, commercial, and home based heat which would otherwise be unused, to make power. Since much of the quality of this heat is low, efficiency to capture and convert to power is also low. This makes the most sense (payback) where utility (grid-based) power rates are at or above $.15 per kwh.

Caster Beam Modular Pre Fabricated Structure

Unlimited Build License Available.

Since 2008 Infinity has been building hundreds of turbine and extraction systems all with metal frames. Instead of relying on welded one-use structures, Infinity devised a system to use bolt together beams which had pre drilled 3 inch access ports and 3/8 inch holes for a bolt together system. Beams also have pre drilled 3/8 bolt patterns for standard 5 inch diameter casters which all fast prototyping carts that hold processing equipment, tables, workbenches, and other structures.
